  • You Will Be Found | Inkymole

Back You Will Be Found Benj Pasek & Justin Paul This is the book of the viral hit-song from Broadway hit 'Dear Evan Hansen'. The show's the story of a struggling, lonely lad who happens upon a way to put himself in an unexpected position of both power and likability, but only via his genuine desire to soothe the pain of others, and bring comfort. En route he becomes distinctly less likeable as we watch his own needs begin to obscure his original aims in his painfully human search to belong, and a series of well-meant but ill-judged decisions turn good intentions into a slowly-building, inevitable implosion. And it's all played out on the howling screens of social media against the backdrop of unforgiving high school politics. Published at almost exactly the start of the first pandemic lockdown in 2020, the book's themes of isolation, fear, loneliness and grief suddenly took on an unexpected relevance and meaning, as it was bought not only by its intended audience - fans of the show - but as gifts to be sent to isolated friends and family, and for comfort by people who suddenly found themselves more alone than they'd ever been. The illustrations were made in ink on A3 paper, for client Little, Brown USA. Blog about the project here. Where to buy: UK: Blackwells / USA: Indiebound

  • The history of Gopsall Road, Hinckley

We hand-painted the sign on our wall at the top of Gopsall Road, Hinckley, to share its history with friends, neighbours and residents who may not know its history. When we moved into our house on the corner of Factory Road and Gopsall Road in 1997, we had no idea how old the little street alongside us was. One night in the wee small hour s , the wall at the side of the house was knocked down with a loud and alarming 'thud'. We never did find the culprit, but we took the opportunity to paint the name of the road onto the wall when we rebuilt it. And in 2024, with the remodelling and updates to the extension, alongside the addition of our custom-designed trellises for the wisteria, we painted it afresh. The sign was much admired, but when the wall was damaged again a couple of years later - a few days after our other wall was demolished by a runaway van! - we decided to re-paint the sign, this time with a nod to what we'd recently learned: that Gopsall Road, long before it was given a proper name, was known as 'Ten Foot'. Our Story PAINTING THE SIGN The sign was first made as a template, then the letters typeset to match, as close as possible, the lettering on the 'official' sign opposite. We added the 'FORMERLY', referencing the point size and font styling of street signs in the region which do a similar job - those for a cul-de-sac, for example. The font is ' Goudy Old Style', with a reasonable amount of spacing and historically appropriate kerning . The letterforms were applied with pencil, then painted in mega-permanent, specialist marker. We hope, however, the sign will gently age as appropriate, with time. THE HISTORY This is a section from a 1909 map of Hinckley, owned by John Coleman. At the top, in the centre, you can just see the little letter s spelling out 'The Ten Foot'. This is about two-thirds of the way down the length of the current Gopsall Road, leading from the top of Factory Road. Our neighbours Mick and Jill, residents of Gopsall Road since the mid-fifties, shared with us their photographs of 'The Ten Foot' as it looked when they moved in; a dirt track on a sunny day, with Mick's Dad in the picture. There's a cart in the road - as in, horse and cart! At this point, the houses only ran part of the way down. Here's a nice big version of the same map, overlaid across a contemporary map of the area. We've left it uncropped so you can get your bearings! If you look closely, you can see the 'Ten Foot' lettering sitting just over the lower houses in Gopsall Road - and it's clear that the dog-leg at the end wasn't yet built up on either side. It's believed it was an orchard. This is a close-up. Note how this map still thinks Gopsall Road is a cul-de-sac! Neighbour Mary also remembers the road being called ' Ten Foot'. And we've since learned that the jitties across from us - the myriad little paths that run from Factory Road as foot-based shortcuts into the town - were known as 'Five Feet' or 'Five Footers'. THANK YOU Thanks to Mary, Mick and Gill, John Coleman and Terry for the information maps, photos and the two-hour 'Gopsall Road Massive' summit in the sunshine. We are Leigh & Sarah , and we've been living in Factory Road (and as honorary residents of Gopsall Road) for over 25 years. If you have any information or history you'd like to share, please let us know, we'd love to hear it!

  • DREAM BIG | Inkymole

Illustration by Sarah J Coleman for Dream Big, debut book by Abby The Astronaut Back DREAM BIG! Abby Harrison & Sarah J.Coleman Through lockdowns and beyond, these seven little pen-and-ink characters lived on my desk for nine months of 2020, and take you though Abby 'The Astronaut' Harrison's process of breaking that big, blob-like 'dream' that you have into small, achievable steps, 'til one day...you're THERE. "From Astronaut Abby, the dynamic founder of The Mars Generation, comes a book about dreaming big, reaching for the stars, and making a plan for success! From the age of four, Abigail Harrison knew she wanted to go to space. At age eleven, she sat down and wrote out a plan - not just for how to become an astronaut, but how to be the first astronaut to set foot on Mars. With a degree in biology, internships at NASA, and a national organization founded to help kids reach for the stars themselves, Astronaut Abby is well on her way to achieving her dreams-and she wants to help others do the same!" Published by Philomel Books , part of Penguin Kids, February 2021, ages 11 and up. Buy a copy here if you're in the US, and here if you're in the UK.

  • The Family Dinner | Inkymole

Back The Family Dinner Laurie David Laurie's book on family cooking and eating is more than just a recipe book - it was a manifesto for eating together as a family unit, whatever shape that takes! Award-winning author, producer, environmental advocate and blogger, Laurie was also the wife of comedian Larry David, which is how I knew of her when Grand Central Publishing asked me to illustrate her book. I was delighted: I love food, and cooking, and moreover EATING, so the idea of drawing dinners, sandwiches, vegetables and everything else was an ideal brief. That 'done-is-better-than-perfect' energy comes across in the book, I think! The illustrations were made in pen and ink with some digital colour added, and I made busy endpapers too. You can get a copy here.

  • Personal Projects | Inkymole

Creative Adventures Outside of commissioned and commercial work I've always done lots of other projects. These are usually created and executed with my partner Leigh, and are usually things we want to try out, do for the sake of doing, or experiment with. They’re neither designed to make money (though they sometimes do), nor to satisfy any brief but our own. They’re also, sometimes, collaborative, and are almost always for the entertainment and engagement of other people. This is just some of them. It's a popular term, but I don't like to call these 'side' projects. These are large scale, personal experiments often with weeks or months of work invested in them. Rather than being squeezed in at the sides, they've elbowed their way into a busy schedule, usually at the cost of sleep! Tinselsnakes A 7" record in an illustrated storybook telling a specially-commissioned story, with narration and bespoke musical accompaniment.
